Meet the team.
Ian Toll – Company Founder
Ian is one of the original founders of the business and is a mechanical engineer with over 30 years experience in the design, manufacture and installation of large turnkey process solutions for companies worldwide. Ian also has extensive knowledge of the commercial applications and potential for using autoclave technology within the waste industry.
Ian previously worked as managing director at Jet Seats, a subsidiary of an AIM listed group, designing and manufacturing aircraft seats and interiors. In 1979, Ian formed his own company, becoming managing director of Futair Limited and its subsidiary Aeroform. The group specialised in aircraft seating and interiors and began developing expertise in the processing of advanced composite materials as well as in the development and manufacture of autoclaves (the processing equipment in which these components are manufactured). Ian sold the companies to the $2.3bn Kidde Corporation in 1985 where he continued to run the company for a further 3 years. During this time Ian was also responsible for the design, development and certification of the world’s first all-carbon-composite civil aircraft passenger seat which was certified for installation into wide-bodied jets. This included approvals from the CAA, FAA and LBA.
Christian Toll, CEng, FIMechE – Chief Executive Officer
Christian is AeroThermal’s CEO, responsible for running the Company on an operational basis. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
Prior to joining AeroThermal, Christian was Vice President of Operations at Thermal Equipment USA, a subsidiary of Aeroform. This role led him to oversee the simultaneous construction of two of the largest autoclaves in the world as part of the Boeing 787 programme in both America and Japan. The project involved construction of a 40-metre long, 600 tonne Boeing 787 wing forming autoclave. Christian brings excellent project management and operational skills to the business.
Dr Nigel Bailey, MA, PhD – Technical Director
Nigel is the Technical Director and Principal Engineer within the Company. He is a highly experienced and well qualified consultant thermodynamicist and mechanical engineer with considerable experience in process engineering for both the oil and power industries.
Nigel has been working part-time (3 days per week) with Ian Toll in the development, sales and manufacturing of thermal processing equipment internationally for the past ten years. His previous experience at the Atomic Energy Authority provides a sound skills basis for the development of full energy from waste plants.
Dr Zengjian Wang, BSc Hons, PhD – Senior Research Manager
Jian is the Company’s Senior Research Manager and has previously worked on anaerobic digestion plants in both commercial units and academic institutions. As well as working in the UK, Jian spent over ten years putting together anaerobic digesters for the Chinese government.
Since April 1997, Jian has worked with the University of Southampton’s School of Civil Engineering & the Environment developing a particular specialism in the development and analysis of digestate to achieve best biogas yield. More specifically he has been involved in two research projects with the university: 1) evaluating the effect of autoclaving on the rate of anaerobic bio-processing of municipal solid waste, and 2) the effect of waste particle sizes on anaerobic biodegradation of organic fraction of MSW.
Tony Kimber, BSc (Hons), CEng MICE MCIWEM – AD Technology Technical Director
Tony leads the AD technology delivery team, he is a chartered Civil Engineer with over 30 years experience in the design and construction of sewage treatment systems. After graduating he completed a four year training period with consultants Pick Everard where he gained his chartered engineer status. Subsequently ten years as a senior/principal engineer with the newly formed Wessex Water Authority gave him wide experience in all forms of sewage treatment systems and particularly Anaerobic Digestion. His interest in anaerobic technology was furthered by founding a company (ECL) to specialise in the design & build of AD plants. ECL successfully built several green field AD plants for most of the UK Water Companies before selling to MJ Gleeson Group Plc, where for the next 15 years, the focus was on larger contracts. In 2006 Tony and his ECL business was sold to Black & Veatch where he became technical director of the bio-solids division.
In summary, Tony has been responsible for the D&B of approx 60 AD plants, successfully managing the EPC contracts and leading multiple overall site delivery teams. He has recently joined ATG to bring this wide experience to help develop ATG’s Autoclave-AD application for treating solid wastes, with immediate focus on the site delivery of Project Hardy.
