Waste and recycling

AeroThermal has incorporated aerospace technology into an in-house designed and patented rotating macerating and hydrolysing steam-injection autoclave. Uses for the recovered organic materials range from:

  • anaerobic digesters
  • recovery of cellulosic fibre for building products
  • pelletized cellulose floc for gasification
  • feedstock for fermentation to bio-ethanol and/or bio-butanol.

Our unique patented autoclave system sterilises, pasteurises, hydrolyses and breaks down most types of organic waste without the need for pre-process de-packing, providing a much enhanced feedstock for anaerobic digesters and significant increases the typical gas yields of non-autoclaved waste. Successfully trialled over a thousand hours, AeroThermal has shown in our contract research laboratory that pre-treating some wastes with an autoclave can double the throughput of anaerobic digesters.

Aerospace

AeroThermal has extensive expertise in meeting the high-quality standards required by the aerospace industry. With over three decades of practical and technical experience, our team has designed and project-managed autoclave construction for leading global companies, with clients including Boeing, Airbus, BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin, British Airways and the RAF.

More recently we have designed, constructed and installed an 18 foot diameter state-of-the-art autoclave featuring the AeroThermal ‘golden seam’ which is 100% radiographic tested, for UTC Aerospace Systems. The autoclave is so large that it needed to be moved in two parts.

Once it was pressure tested, it was cut into two sections and shipped separately to the site where it was welded together with AeroThermal’s “golden seam”, meaning it was tested with X-rays to prove its integrity.

The company has expertise in specialist thermal processing equipment, custom-designed and manufactured with proven aerospace processing capability. These operate at extremely high tolerances and exacting standards for a variety of applications, and temperatures can reach 400oC.
